GM #8: Brownsville, TX 12 Washington County, PA 3 (F/7)

Game Eight of the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series concluded day two with South Zone Champion Brownsville, TX eliminating host Washington County, PA by a score of 12-3. Despite the lopsided victory, history was made when Brownsville’s Ana Rivera made the first plate appearance by a female in Pony League World Series history.

Not only did Rivera end with two plate appearances (0-2), she pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs, three hits, one walk and struck out three.

Brownsville’s Jose Gutierrez singled in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead and it was never relinquished. The South Zone champs added three more runs in the second and third innings to lead 4-0.

Washington County sparked in the fourth when Nicholas Hilbert hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1, but after leaving runners stranded, Brownsville poured on eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 12-1, all highlighted by the eight run sixth that included five straight RBI hits.

Washington staved off 10-run elimination in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, but when it was said and done the host team is sent home packing after defeats of 15-13 to East Zone Champion Bronx, NY yesterday and tonight’s defeat.

On the mound, Brownsville’s starter Hugo Cantu picked up the win and had a perfect game before being taken out after throwing 2.2 innings. In relief, three Brownsville pitchers combined to throw 4.1 innings and allowed three runs, six hits, two walks and struck out six.

Ryan Silver took the loss for Washington County, allowing four runs (two earned), seven hits, and struck out two in three innings. Washington County’s relief managed to allow eight runs (seven earned), six hits, five walks, and struck out two.

With the victory, Brownsville stays alive and moves on in the loser’s bracket to face East Zone Champion Bronx, NY at 12:30 p.m. ET-USA tomorrow.
