The DICK'S Sporting Goods
PONY League World Series

GM #11: Taipei County, Chinese Taipei 4 Youngstown, OH 0 (F/5)

For the first time in the 67 year history of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series, Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Taipei County, Chinese Taipei’s Wu, Sin-Jie threw the first ever complete perfect game defeating Host Area Champion Youngstown, OH 4-0 in five innings in game eleven of the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series.

The last time a perfect game was thrown in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series came back on August 21, 1969 when Reinaldo Duran of Caracas, VZ threw seven perfect innings. However, Duran left after the seventh inning and did not have a complete perfect game.

Due to the rainy conditions of day three, day four of the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series consists of six games all being played as five inning games. Wu, Sin-Jie in the five inning affair struck out nine of the 15 Youngstown batters he face and threw just 57 pitches to get the perfect game.

Offense was at a premium as the only two hits came by Chinese Taipei, only one of them reaching the outfield. The two combined hits is a record for fewest combined hits in Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series history.

Chinese Taipei produced its runs by way of an RBI groundout, two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly, while also capitalizing on two Youngstown errors.

Youngstown’s, Colten Shaffer pitched admirably allowing four runs (one earned), two hits and struck out one, also throwing a complete five innings.

With the victory, Chinese Taipei returns to the field later this afternoon with a game set to start at approximately 5 p.m. against either Caribbean Zone Champion Yaguate, Dominican Republic or a rematch against Youngstown.

Youngstown does in fact play Yaguate at approximately 1 p.m. in a win or go home elimination game.
