2017 PONY League World Series

For the fourth consecutive year, the Asia-Pacific zone champion and the West-Zone champion matched up in the championship game of the Printscape PONY League World Series with Seoul, Korea facing Covina, California. Both teams entered untouched, each with a perfect record, for the game that would ultimately decide the title. Covina trailed Seoul 1-0 since the first inning until Hector Bautista drove in the tying run in the top of the 7th inning that extended the game to extra innings. After allowing Seoul's single run, Covina's pitcher, James Jimenez, tightened down on Seoul's offense leaving the game after seven innings pitched with nine strikeouts and four hits. However, Jimenez's heroics for Covina weren't over. In the 8th inning with the game tied at 1-1, Jimenez sent a two-run home run over the rightfield wall, which was enough to outlast Seoul for a 3-1 victory that crowned Covina the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series Champion. 





Championship Game Highlights


James Jimenez allowed one run over seven innings and smashed a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to crown Covina, CA the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series Champions with a dramatic 3-1 victory over Seoul, Korea in eight innings.

Covina’s win was the third Printscape PONY League World Series championship for the city and its first since 1999.

The victory also marked the 22nd champion crowned from the state of California and the first since 2012.

Jimenez became the 24th pitcher to win three games in a single Printscape PONY League World Series, the first since 2012 allowing one run, four hits, one walk and nine strikeouts over seven innings.

Covina trailed from the first inning until the seventh inning when Hector Bautista tied the game on an RBI single with two outs, making the score 1-1.

Jake Vargas and Anthony Rasmussen combined for one inning of relief, allowing three hits and struck out two.

Rasmussen’s picked up the save to solidify Covina’s victory.

Korea’s lone offense came when Kim Min-Hyuk doubled in Bae Hun-Jun making it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Korea was silenced offensively until the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but couldn’t muster a run.

Lee Yong-Jun stifled Covina early allowing just three hits over five innings, striking out four.

Choi Woo-In, Chang Seung-Jun and Park Jun-Young combined for three innings of relief, allowing three runs, five hits and struck out three. Park Jun-Young was credited with the loss

Game #16 Covina, California 14 vs. Bay County, Michigan 1 (4 1/2 innings)


Chris Munoz’s fourth inning grand slam solidified Covina, CA’s spot in tomorrow evening’s Printscape PONY League World Series championship game against Seoul, Korea with a 14-1 win over Bay County, MI.

For the fourth straight year and fifth time in the last six years, the Printscape PONY League World Series championship game matches up the Asia-Pacific Zone champion and the West Zone champion.

Bay County, MI finished its appearance in the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series with a record of 2-2 with two wins against Brownsville, TX and two loses to Covina.

Two Bay County errors scored Covina’s Hector Bautista to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

A two-RBI Jake Vargas double and a James Jimenez RBI single in the bottom of the third gave Covina 4-0 lead.

Bay County left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, but a single, three walks and a wild pitch gave Bay County its first run of the game making it 4-1.

Munoz’s grand slam, four walks, two errors and a hit batter fueled Covina’s 10 run bottom of the fourth, giving Covina a 14-1 lead.

Covina’s pitching stifled Bay County offensively to the tune of just one run and four hits.

James Jimenez allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out three over three innings of work to pick up the win.

Anthony Rasmussen allowed the one run, three hits, three walks and struck out three in two innings of work.

Bay County had opportunities to add more runs on the board to support starting pitcher Grant Horner, but six of nine runners left on base were left in scoring position.

Horner pitched admirably and kept Bay County in the game early, allowing four runs (three earned), seven hits, one walk and struck out one.

Tommy Szczepanski, Nick Rajewski and Blake Waibel combined for one inning of relief and allowed a combined 10 runs (seven earned), four hits, four walks and three strikeouts.

Game #15 Seoul, Korea 11 vs. Youngstown, Ohio 1 (6 innings)

Three homeruns and timely pitching highlighted Seoul, Korea’s 11-1 victory over Youngtown, OH.

Seoul’s win punches its ticket to the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series Championship game tomorrow night against either Bay County, MI or Covina, CA.

The loss sends Youngstown home with an impressive 3-2 record, including two elimination game victories.

Choi Woo-In was the spark offensively going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-run rule victory.

Kim Gyeong-Yui drove in Seoul’s first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

Kim Min-Hyuk and Choi Woo-In hit a two-run home run and solo home run respectively in the third inning, making it 4-0 after three innings.

A solo home run by Jung Hui-Chan, Seoul’s third of the night, highlighted a six run bottom of the fifth for Seoul, extending its lead to 10-1.

Youngstown had opportunities to score in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, but Seoul’s starting pitcher Lee Yun-Min and reliever Kim Chun-Ki combined to leave four Youngstown runner in scoring position.

The only Youngstown player to score was Ty Ventresco who hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.

Lee Yun-Min threw four innings, allowing one run (earned), three hits and struck out three, picking up the victory.

Kim Chun-Ki and Park Jun-Young combined for two innings of relieve, allowing one hit and struck out two.

Seve Cantini takes the loss for Youngstown allowing six runs (all earned), six hits and two walks in three innings.

Jeremy Kreuzwieser allowed five runs (four earned), seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts over two-plus innings of relief.

Game #14 Bay County, Michigan 8 vs. Brownsville, Texas 4

Bay County, MI used a three-run first and fourth inning to hold off a Brownsville, TX comeback attempt to move on into the 8 pm game with an 8-5 victory.

In the top of the first, Bay County’s offense wasted no time against Brownsville starter Javier Hinojosa, loading the bases with no outs.

The first chance with the bases filled was Bay County first baseman Mason Kolak, who struck out swinging for the first out. Luke Savage then saw a runner cross on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Savage then reached on an error, earning an RBI when Brenden Bonnell scored to make it 2-0, but the error cost a second RBI to Savage’s total when Logan Hugo scored on the same play due to the error, making it 3-0 Bay County.

After another Bay County single, Hinojosa was relieved by Jose Banda with two outs in the bottom of the first and Banda inherited two of Hinojosa’s runners, but picked up the strikeout to limit the damage to just three runs.

Bay County added another run in the bottom of the third with two outs on a wild pitch by Banda, scoring Bryce Fredenburg to make it 4-0.

Brownsville found itself on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Honelio Leal doubled in Rafael Parra, before being thrown out after over-running second base, making the score 4-1.

Darren Ramirez made the score 4-2 on an RBI single driving in Rene Sanchez from second. The base hit removed Grant Horner from the mound and he was relieved by Blake Waibel.

Waibel immediately issued a walk to Derrick Ramirez to load the bases with two outs. The walk brought up Hinojosa, looking to make up for the three runs he allowed in the bottom of the first, but struck out to end the inning and Brownsville still trailed 4-2.

Bay County took exception to its lead being cut in half, loading the bases with no outs. Hugo notched a base hit to center field, earning one of the two runs back that Bay County allowed in the top of the fourth making it 5-2, then Luke Savage doubled in a pair to make it 7-2.

With two outs, Bay County reloaded the bases, but were unable to add to add to the lead and the fourth inning ended with a 7-2 Bay County lead.

Brownsville chiseled its way back in it in the top of the fifth, when Rene Sanchez hit a two-RBI single up the middle to cut the Bay County lead to 7-4 with one out.

Yesterday’s elimination game hero versus Washington, Marco Martinez, was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Darren Ramirez followed with an RBI groundout to make it 7-5. Derrick Ramirez was the final out of the innings, flying out to left field, leaving the score 7-5 after four and a half innings.

Bay County upped its lead to 8-5 on a throwing error by Brownsville catcher Heriberto Maldonado attempting to throw out Kolak at third and a double play ended the inning.

The victory on the mound goes to Grant Horner, allowing two runs (both earned), six hits, two walks and three strikeouts over 3.2 innings pitched.

Waibel pitched 1.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs (all earned), three hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Tommy Szczepanski picked up the save, allowing no runs, no hits, one walk and four strikeouts over two innings.

The loss for Brownsville went to Hinojosa, allowing three runs (two earned), two hits, one walk and a strikeout over .2 innings.

Banda pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run (earned) two hits, one walk and struck out seven.

Garcia and Darren Ramirez combined to allow two runs (both earned), four hits, one walk and three strikeouts in three innings of relief.

The loss sends Brownsville, TX home with a record of 2-2, but most notably, the #1 play on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays for its amazing walk-off victory versus Washington, PA.

The win sends Bay County into a win or go home matchup later this evening against Covina, CA at 8.

Game #13 Youngstown, Ohio 9 vs. Hagerstown, Maryland 7


Youngstown used nine runs in the first two innings to hold off Hagerstown’s nearly dramatic comeback bid to stave off elimination and advance to a win or go home matchup later this evening with a 9-7 victory.

In the top of the first, Youngstown picked up a double and a single to open the contest, before an error by Hagerstown’s Corey Jamison, attempting to catch Trey Pancake stealing, sailed to the outfield making it 1-0 Youngstown.

Shawn Helpy continued the inning with an RBI single to right field and then set up a run down attempting to steal second, scoring Howard to make it 3-0 and avoiding the tag to be safe at second.

Brandon Mikos, a late addition to the lineup due to injury, doubled to left-center field, scoring Helpy, giving Youngstown a 4-0 lead after the top half of the first.

In the top of the second, Youngstown opened with back-to-back singles, spelling the early end of the morning on the mound for Josh Black.

Relieving Black in second was Tyler Crain, who allowed a bunt hit to Pancake to load the bases, an RBI single to Ty Ventresco to make it 5-0 and a two-RBI double to Ronnie Howard to make it 7-0, before recording a strikeout for the first out.

Starting pitcher Luke Gehring followed the strikeout with a two-RBI double to left field, expanding the Youngstown lead to 9-0.

Hagerstown managed to get the offense going in the bottom of the third when Jamison doubled down the left-field line, scoring both Michael Keats and Parker Martin to make it 9-2 after three innings.

Right back at it in the bottom of the fourth was Hagerstown when Cam Moats belted a two-run home run to straightaway center field, cutting the Youngstown lead down to 9-4 after four innings.

9-5 was the score in the bottom of the fifth, when Kyle West scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit closer for Hagerstown.

Bradley Summers then connected with an RBI double to left-center field to make it 9-6 and was followed by Black who notched an RBI single to make it 9-7 at the end of five.

Jeremy Kreuzweiser relieved Gehring in the bottom of the sixth, looking to earn the six out save for Youngstown.

Hagerstown used two walks to put two runners in scoring position, but Kreuzweiser came up big with a clutch strikeout of Corey Jamison to end the sixth with the 9-7 lead intact.

Hagerstown had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and after a groundout to start the inning, Josh Crampton doubled to right field setting up a runner in scoring position.

Relief pitcher Tyler Crain was unable to help the cause looking at strike three for out number two. Cam Moats, who hit a home run earlier in the game, was struck out swinging to end the game with a final score of 9-7.

The victory for Youngstown goes to Gehring, allowing seven runs (all earned), six hits, three walks and twelve strikeouts over five innings. Kreuzweiser picked up the six out save, allowing no runs, one hit, two walks and four strikeouts over two innings.

The loss for Hagerstown goes to Black, allowing six runs (all earned), six hits, one walk and a strike out in one-plus innings of work. Crain, in relief, allowed three runs (all earned), seven hits and struck out five over six innings of work.

The loss sends Hagerstown home after a 1-2 showing in the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series.

The win for Youngstown moves it into a matchup against Seoul, Korea later this evening at 5:30. A win for Youngstown against Seoul, Korea sets-up an if necessary rematch tomorrow, but a loss will send Youngstown home.

Game #12 Covina, California 9 vs. Bay County, Michigan 5

Covina, CA used seven extra-base hits, two of which were home runs, to upend the North Zone Champion Bay County, MI in a winner’s bracket matchup to end day four of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series.

Covina’s first appearance in the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series was a 10-0 victory in five innings. The bats were rolling from the start when Luke Willison smashed a solo home run in the top of the first to give Covina an early 1-0 lead.

Jake Vargas showed of his power for Covina in the top of the second, taking Bay County starter Blake Waibel deep to make the lead 2-0.

Covina second baseman Chris Munoz grounded out to shortstop to drive in the third run of the game, making it 3-0 after an inning and a half.

In the third inning, Covina used a wild pitch on a strikeout, hit batter, a walk and another wild pitch to score its fourth run of the game to take a 4-0 lead through the top half of the inning.

Bay County finally got the bats going in the bottom of the third when right fielder Brenden Bonnell doubled to left-center field, scoring shortstop Eric Randall from first base to make it 4-1.

Center fielder Logan Hugo followed and reached first on a fielding error by Covina shortstop Anthony Rasmussen, that brought Bonnell around to score, cutting the lead in half to 4-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning for Covina, back-to-back RBI hits by Parker Miramontez (double) and Jake Vargas (single), gave Covina its four-run lead back and it was now 6-2 in the top of the fifth.

Later in the top of the fifth, James Jimenez singled in both Vargas and Rasmussen to extend the lead to 8-2.

Bay County took exception to the four-run top of the fifth by Covina and found its way right back in it.

Randall walked to open the bottom of the fifth, then Bonnell singled to left field and two errors by Covina brought Randall home to score and make it 8-3 and Bonnell ended up at third 

Immediately following, Logan Hugo belted a two-run home run to straightaway centerfield to cut the lead down to 8-5.

After a strikeout for out number two, Bay County’s Luke Savage singled and Carter Sonntag doubled to put two more runners in scoring position. However, Bryce Frendenburg was unable to add to the tally, striking out to end the inning with the score at 8-5.

Covina contributed to its lead in the top of the seventh with back-to-back doubles by Hector Bautista and Robert Hernandez to make the score 9-5.

Mike Gonzalez picked up the win for Covina throwing 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned), eight hits, two walks and struck out four. In relief, Vargas pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs, no hits and struck out three.

The loss for Bay County goes to Blake Waibel, allowing four runs (all earned), three hits, one walk and five strikeouts in three innings. Mason Kolak threw 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs (all earned), five hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Tommy Szczepanski finished the evening, allowing one run (earned), two hits and struck out four over 1.2 innings pitched.

Bay County’s loss sends it to an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm in a rematch against Brownsville, TX.

Covina moves into the division finals to face the winner of the Bay County vs Brownsville rematch tomorrow night at eight.

Game #11 Seoul, Korea 10 vs. Hagerstown, Maryland 3

Lee Wong-Chan’s grand slam, the 45th in Printscape PONY League World Series history, along with Chang Seong-Ik’s one run, two hit performance over five innings, sparked the Asia-Pacific Zone champions, Seoul, Korea in Game #11 of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series, defeating East Zone champion Hagerstown, MD, 10-3.

Seoul struck immediately in the top of the first when Jung Hui-Chan hit a solo shot to right field for an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Seoul added another run when Han Tae-Yang singled to left field, scoring Kim Sung-Min to take a 2-0 lead.

It wasn’t until the fifth inning when Hagerstown could break through on Seoul starter Chang Seong-Ik, when right fielder Cam Moats belted a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit in half to 2-1.

The top of the sixth saw Seoul load the bases with just one out and pinch-hitter Cho Kyu-Taek and second baseman Han Tae-Yang both earned RBI walks to extend the lead to 4-1.

The walk to Han Tae-Yang ended Dillinger’s night on the mound for Hagerstown, summoning Parker Martin to inherit the bases loaded jam.

Lee Wong-Chan, the first batter to face Martin, saw two pitches before crushing a grand slam to left field, giving Seoul a commanding 8-1 lead through five and a half innings.

The grand slam closed the book on Dillinger’s evening, having allowed seven runs (all earned), six hits, two walks and eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

Chang Seong-Ik was relieved after five innings of work, allowing one run (earned), two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Seoul added to its already commanding lead. Jung Hui-Chan led-off the frame with a double to right-center field, ultimately to be drive in on an RBI single to right-center field by Choi Woo-In.

Cho Kyu-Taek added another run to make it 10-1 on an RBI groundout before another groundout ended the top of the seventh inning.

Hagerstown fought until the end, adding a couple more runs in the bottom of the seventh, thanks in part to a two-run home run by left fielder Tyler Crain, making the score 10-3.

The loss for Hagerstown goes to Dillinger and the East Zone champions now move to the loser’s bracket and face Youngstown, OH tomorrow at 10 am.

Chang Seong-Ik earns the win for Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Zone champions move to the semi-finals of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series and await the winner of the Hagerstown, MD vs Youngstown, OH matchup.

Game #10 Brownsville, Texas 4 vs. Washington Co., Pennsylvania 3

The second and final elimination game of day four at the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series saw the hometown kids from Washington, PA look to win its second game in the same Printscape PONY League World Series for the first time since 2006 against the South Zone champion Brownsville, TX, in what was a stellar extra inning affair.

After a crushing 10-0 loss to Covina, CA on Sunday, Washington used the chip on its shoulder and two early errors by Brownsville to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Left fielder Nick Popielarczyk drove in pitcher Chad Johnson on an infield single to make it 1-0 and the second run came on a throwing error on the same play by Brownsville third baseman Jose Banda, making it 2-0.

Brownsville regrouped in the bottom of the first, and Banda made up for his two errors in the top of the first, driving in his sixth run of the tournament on an RBI single to cut the score in half to 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Brownsville took the lead 3-2 by way of three Washington errors and a wild pitch. Neither run allowed in the inning was earned against Johnson.

Johnson’s day on the mound ended, having allowed three runs (one earned), three hits and struck out one over two innings of work.

Justin Naylor relieved Johnson, coasting in the bottom of the third, striking out two on just nine pitches.

Brownsville starting pitcher Rafael Parra was relieved after three innings of work, allowing two runs (no earned), two hits and struck out four.

Fidel Garcia, Brownsville’s reliever, equaled Naylor’s first inning of work, striking out two in his first inning of work as well, while throwing just eight pitches.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth where thing got interesting again when Brownsville had the bases loaded after an error, hit batter and a walk. However, Naylor worked his way out of the two out, bases loaded jam inducing a ground ball to retire the side and hold the score at 3-2.

In the sixth, Washington had a runner in scoring position with two outs and re-entering Popielarczyk came through with his second RBI single of the game to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth.

Ben Hardy followed Popielarczyk with a single and that spelled the end of Garcia’s relieve appearance after allowing one run (earned), two hits and six strikeouts over 2.2 innings pitched.

Jose Banda relieved Garcia in the sixth with runners on first and second with two out and struck out Washington’s Brandon Adams on four pitches to retire the side and hold the score to 3-3 after five and a half innings.

Brownsville had an opportunity with a runner at second and two outs in the bottom of the sixth and couldn’t break through thanks to a tremendous diving catch by Hardy on a shallow blooper in front of second base to retire the side still tied 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brownsville got itself a runner on second with one out and a fantastic diving play on a line drive to third by third baseman Brent Kurtz made it two outs.

Banda was intentionally walked to bring up the re-entering Capistran and Naylor got him swinging to end the threat and send it into extras tied 3-3.

In the top of the eighth, Washington was behind with two outs and no one on, but a walk to Connor McMahon and a base hit by Popielarczyk put runners on the corners.

The single brought up Hardy and he was unable to come through, striking out to end the top half of the eighth, score still tied at 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brownsville got runners on first and second with one out thanks to a hit batter and an error and it ended Naylor’s time on the mound.

Popielarczyk relieved Naylor and got Maldonado to fly out for out number two, but a single by Darren Ramirez drove in Marco Martinez who refused the third base coaches stop sign and leaped over the tag of Washington catcher Mekos Mantalis to score the winner run and walk it off for Brownsville, 4-3.

The loss goes to Naylor, as the runner on second was inherited by Popielarczyk. Naylor ended the day allowing one run (unearned), one hit, two walks and eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched.

The winning pitcher for Brownsville is Banda who allowed no runs, one hit, one walk and struck out five in 2.1 innings pitched.

The loss sends Washington home after a 1-2 showing in the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series, while Brownsville moves on to face the loser of Game #12 between Bay County, MI and Covina, CA at 12:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Game #9 Youngstown, Ohio 11 vs. Guasave, Mexico 8

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - Day four of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series kicked off with an elimination contest between Mexico and Youngstown, OH.

Mexico enjoyed the day off Sunday, despite the loss to Seoul, Korea on Saturday, while Youngstown staved off elimination on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Levittown, PR.

Youngstown jumped ahead right away in the bottom of the first when starting pitcher Trey Pancake doubled to right field, stole second and was driven in on an RBI single by left fielder Ty Ventresco.

A single by catcher Ronnie Howard then a wild pitch put runners on second and third, but another wild pitch by Mexico starter Said Cota scored Ventresco to make it 2-0 Youngstown, then first baseman Jake Gehring singled with two outs, driving in Howard to up the score to 3-0.

Cota was relieved on the mound following another single and his line for the afternoon read 0.2 innings, allowing three runs (all earned), five hits and one strikeout. Mizael Esparza came in relief of Cota and after hitting the first batter he faced to load the bases, struck out Youngstown second baseman Brandon Mikos to retire the side.

In the top of the second, Mexico chipped away at the 3-0 deficit scoring one run on an RBI double by right fielder Jesus Parra, scoring center fielder Joel Sanchez, making it 3-1. Youngstown regained the run it allowed in the bottom of the second when Pancake scored his second run of the game on an RBI double by Howard to make it 4-1.

The three run Youngstown lead was cut to one when Sanchez hit a two-run home run to right center field, scoring second baseman Nomar Valdez, making it 4-3 after two and a half innings. The back-and- forth scoring continued in the bottom of the third when pinch hitter Jeremy Kreuzwieser singled and drove in shortstop Austin Vogt, upping the Youngstown lead to 5-3 after three innings.

Youngstown again had the offense rolling in the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded and no outs. Howard came up clutch again, ripping a two RBI double down the right field line, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by third baseman Shawn Helpy and an RBI double by Gehring, all making the score 9-3 after four innings.

Mexico looked to climb back into the game in the top of the fifth, getting runners on second and third with one out. However, Mexico could only bring one run across on an RBI groundout by third baseman Pedro Cervantes, making the score 9-4.

Youngstown earned its run allowed back, thanks again to Howard when he hit his third double of the game and picked up his fourth RBI to make the score 10-4 through five innings. Pancake was relieved in the top of the sixth, trading places defensively with shortstop Austin Vogt, after throwing five innings, allowing four runs (all earned), seven hits and one walk.

Vogt shut down Mexico one-two- three in the top of the sixth inning and added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, extending Youngstown's lead to 11-4 after six innings.

Mexico had one last chance to keep its Printscape PONY League World Series hopes alive and certainly made the most of it. A hit batter and walk, with no outs, led to a two RBI double by Valder to make it 11-6 and an RBI single by first baseman Vidal Sotelo made it 11-7, spelling the end of the afternoon for Vogt on the mound.

Vogt was relieved by Seve Cantini, after allowing three runs (all earned), two hits, a walk, strikeout and a hit batter. Cantini came in and picked up a strikeout right away, but a single put runners on first and third for Mexico with one out, followed by a wild pitch putting two ducks on the pond.

Pedro Felix then drew a one out walk, loading the bases and the score moved to 11-8 on a sacrifice fly by Parra, and then Pabel Navarro struck out to end the game and Youngstown advances with the 11-8 victory. Pancake received the victory for Youngstown and the save goes to Cantini. For Mexico, Cota takes the loss and Esparza finished the game going 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned), ten hits, one walk and struck out three.

Youngstown continues its run in the Printscape PONY League World Series and moves on to play another elimination game tomorrow against the loser of Seoul, Korea and Hagerstown, MD at 10 am. For Mexico, it time at the Printscape PONY League World Series comes to an end with a 1-2 record.

Game #8 Brownsville, Texas 12 vs. Netherlands 4


WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - In Game #7, Puerto Rico became the first of the 10 teams in the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series to be sent home. Day three of the Printscape PONY League World Series concluded with the second elimination game of the day between the European Zone champion, the Netherlands and the South Zone champion, Brownsville, TX.

Brownsville, fresh of its loss to Bay County, MI, a loss in which it blew two leads of 3-0 and 4-2, scored again in the first inning when right fielder Jose Banda drove in his fifth run of the tournament on an RBI single that gave Brownsville a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the top of the second, the Netherlands managed to load the bases with one out, on a hit batter and two walks, but a strike out and unassisted putout at first base ended the threat for the Netherlands, who still trailed 1-0. Brownsville tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-0 lead on a balk and a 4-0 lead on a two-run home run by left fielder Victor Estrada.

The Netherlands got the feeling of what it's like to hit a home run in the Printscape PONY League World Series when in the top of the third, Tariq Kemp hit a two-run home run, scoring Raydley Legito, to cut the deficit in half to 4-2 after two and a half innings.

Despite trimming the lead, the Netherlands couldn't buy an out in the third and Brownsville took a five-run, 7-2 lead on a home run by third baseman Rafael Parra. 

The home run was the second of the night for Brownsville and a single immediately following chased Netherland's starter Gio de Graauw.

Aiden Brodsjo relieved de Graauw in the third and the first batter he faced doubled setting up runners on second and third with no outs. Brodsjo got Estrada to ground out for the first out, but then gave up a two RBI single to Brownsville second baseman Darren Ramirez to make the score 9-2. A double-play ended the inning for Brownsville and the lead stayed intact at 9-2 after three innings.

de Graauw's line closed in the third inning for the Netherlands, allowing eight runs (seven earned), nine hits, a walk and a strikeout. Brownsville's starting pitcher Jorge Lozano also was relieved after three innings, allowing two runs (both earned), three hits, three walks and struck out three.

In the top of the fifth, the Netherlands had a great opportunity to jump back into the game with runners on second and third and Brownsville reliever Michael Ramos balked to bring home Kemp, making it 9-3. Nick Boxelaar would be stranded at third and the score held at 9-3 after four and a half.

Trailing 9-3 in the top of the sixth, the Netherlands had runners on second and third yet again, but couldn't manage a run across.

Brownsville opened the bottom of the sixth with back-to- back singles and it spelled the end of the night for Brodsjo. Danny Albinus relieved Brodsjo and struck out the first batter he faced before being taken deep to right-center field by Rafael Capistran to extend the Brownsville lead to 12-3 in the bottom of the sixth. 

Brodsjo's book closed allowing three runs (all earned), four hits, one walk and one strikeout over three-plus innings pitched.

To salvage arms, Ramos was relieved in the top of the seventh after pitching three innings, allowing one run (unearned), three hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

In the seventh, Parra got the first out and the Netherlands used an error, single and a walk to load the bases with one out. Netherlands right fielder Jesse Velders drew the second walk of the inning with one out, making it 12-4. Parra was then relived by Banda after the RBI free pass.

Banda fared much better as he left the bases loaded and struck out back-to- back batters ending the game 12-4 in favor of Brownsville.

Lozano receives the victory for Brownsville, while de Graauw is handed the loss.

With the victory, Brownsville moves on to play another elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm against host Washington, PA.

For the Netherlands, its first trip to the Printscape PONY League World Series ends, but it fought hard it its two defeats to Washington and Brownsville.

Game #7 Youngstown, Ohio 2 vs. Levittown, Puerto Rico 0


The first elimination game of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series matched-up the Host Area champions from Youngstown, OH and the Caribbean Zone champions from Levittown, PR in a classic pitching duel, but Youngstown’s Brandon Mikos’
shutout lead the way in the 2-0 victory.

Youngstown came into the game after a 6-1 defeat to Hagerstown, MD on Friday evening, while Puerto Rico also lost on Friday in the opening game of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series against Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, 4-1.

Neither team could muster any offense through the first five innings. Puerto Rico starter Alejandro Gonzalez allowed three hits and Youngstown starter Brandon Mikos allowed three hits as well, and only two runners were left in scoring position between the two teams.

In the bottom of the sixth, Puerto Rico tallied its fourth hit of the contest and a walk put runners on first and second. However, a throwing error on a pick-off attempt by Youngstown catcher Trey Pancake, to get the runner leading on second, sailed to the outfield and moved
runners to second and third. Luckily, for Youngstown, Mikos set down Puerto Rico pinch-hitter Adrian Rubert for the final out of the sixth and the game still was tied 0-0.

After getting out of the second and third jam in the bottom of the sixth, Youngstown fed on the momentum and the bats came alive. A groundout started things off for Youngstown and Pancake followed with a single up the middle. 

Then, on the first pitch he saw, third baseman Shawn Helpy smacked a two-run home run to left field, giving Youngstown the 2-0 lead.

Gonzalez was stellar on the mound for Puerto Rico, allowing two runs (both earned), five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in a complete game. However, Mikos matched his mound opponent and topped him, allowing no runs, five hits, one walk and struck out 14.

Youngstown keeps its 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series hopes alive and will now continue on in the loser’s bracket to face Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico at 10 am tomorrow in another elimination game. Puerto Rico’s time at the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series comes to an end with loses to Mexico and Youngstown by scores of 4-1 and 2-0.

Game #6 Covina, California 10 vs. Washington County, Pennsylvania 0 (5 innings)


WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - Day three of the 2017 Printscape PONY League World Series began with winner's bracket play between the hometown kids from Washington, PA and a newcomer to the Printscape PONY League World Series, Covina, CA.

Covina didn't waste time scoring its first runs in the Printscape PONY League World Series, plating four in the bottom of the first, taking the early 4-0 lead.

Covina left fielder Robert Hernandez scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by first baseman Parker Miramontez making it 1-0. Right fielder Luke Willison scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 immediately following. The score moved to 3-0 when Home Run Derby champion Anthony Rasmussen doubled in Miramontez and the fourth run, scored by third baseman Jake Vargas, was on the second wild pitch of the inning.

In the top of the second, Washington found itself with two outs, bases loaded and the top of the order up, but was unable to cash-in against Covina starter Chris Munoz.

The West Zone champions from Covina, CA added to its lead in the bottom of the second when Hernandez drove in his first run of the contest on an RBI double upping the lead to 5-0.

Washington starter Blake Stanton was relieved after three innings of work, still trailing 5-0, allowing five runs (all earned), five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Forrest Havanis was called upon by Washington to take the mound in the fourth and was quickly in a bases loaded jam with one out.

Miramontez, Covina's clean-up hitter, was the first to take swings with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and notched a two-RBI double to right-center field making it 7-0. Havanis struck out Vargas for the second out of the inning with runners on second and third and got Rasmussen to ground out, holding the score to 7-0 after four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Covina needed three runs to 10-run Washington and did just that.

Pitcher James Jimenez led-off the inning with a double and his pinch-runner Josh Logan scored on an RBI single by second baseman Chris Munoz. Then, in walk-off fashion, catcher Hector Bautista went deep to right-center field giving Covina a 10-0 victory in five innings.

Stanton received the loss for Washington and his reliever, Havanis, allowed five runs (all earned), five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Jimenez received the win for Covina throwing five innings, allowing no runs, five hits, two walks and struck out seven.
Covina moves on in the winner's bracket to face Bay County, MI tomorrow at 8 pm, while Washington moves to the loser's bracket to face the winner of Brownsville, TX and the Netherlands tomorrow at 12:30 pm in an elimination game.

Game #5 Seoul, Korea 8 vs. Guasave, Mexico 4


WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - Day two of the Printscape PONY League World Series concluded with an international winner's bracket matchup between the Asia-Pacific Zone champion Seoul, Korea and the Mexico Zone champions, fresh off a 3-1 victory yesterday, Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico.

In Game #1 of the Printscape PONY League World Series, Mexico showed off its power striking three home runs. The long ball was back in the bottom of the first when starting pitcher Joel Sanchez took Korea starter Lee Young-Jun deep to left for a three-run home run, giving Mexico an early 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Korea marked its first run on the scoreboard on an RBI groundout by shortstop Lee Woong-Chan, scoring Cho Kyu-Taek to make it 3-1.

Korea's bats heated up in the top of the fourth as it scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Cho Kyu-Taek singled in Kim Min-Hyuk making it 3-2, first baseman Choi Woo-In scored on an RBI groundout by catcher Kim Gyeong-Yui to make it 3-3. Korea then received an RBI single by right fielder Bae Han-Jun and an RBI double by Kim Sung-Min, making it 5-3 Korea after three and a half innings.

Korea was back at it in the top of the fifth inning when Choi Woo-In smacked a solo home run to deep left field, extending the lead to 6-3 for the Asia-Pacific Zone champions.

A lead-off double for Korea in the top of the sixth chased Mexico's Sanchez from the mound, finishing his evening with a line of five-plus innings, allowing seven runs (five earned), nine hits, one walk and struck out one.

In the sixth, Korea capitalized on the lead-off double against Mexico reliever Said Cota, when Kim Gyeung-Yui scored on an error by Mexico second baseman Nomar Valdez, making it 7-3 after five and a half innings.

Korea tallied one more run in the top of the seventh, when Kim Min-Hyuk went deep to left field, making the score 8-3.
Mexico made the most of its final chance at-bat, when pinch-hitter Pavel Navarro hit a solo home run of his own to right field, cutting the Korea lead in half to 8-4.

Sanchez received the loss for Mexico, while Cota threw two innings, allowing one run (earned), two hits and struck out two.
However, the masterful performance of Lee Young-Jun was the story of the night in Korea's 8-4 victory. After allowing the three-run home run in the bottom of the first, Lee Young-Jun set down 18 of the last 21 batters he faced in route to a complete game victory, allowing four runs (all earned), six hits, no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Seoul, Korea moves on in the winner's bracket to face Hagerstown, MD on Monday night at 5:30. Mexico moves into the loser's bracket and will face the winner of tomorrow afternoon's game between Levittown, PR and Youngstown, OH on Monday at 10 am.

Game #4 Washington County, Pennsylvania 9 vs. Netherlands 2

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - Game #4 of the Printscape PONY League World Series matched up the European
Zone champions from the Netherlands, making its first ever appearance at the Printscape PONY League World Series and the hometown kids from Washington, PA.

In the top of the first, the Netherlands jumped ahead quickly in the top of the first when starting pitcher Nick Boxelaar scored third baseman Raydley Legito on an RBI groundout for the early 1-0 lead.

In the opening game of the 2016 Printscape PONY League World Series for Washington, it was not only 10-runed in five innings by Germany, but it was also no-hit. The fortunes were much different this year for the hometown boys, as they took a 2-1 lead in the
bottom of the first.

With one out, Washington loaded the bases with back-to- back hits and reaching on an error to load the bases. Right Fielder Connor McMahon singled in starting pitcher Nick Popielarczyk with
an RBI single and third baseman Chad Johnson scored on a wild pitch.

The Netherlands had a bases loaded situation of its own in the top of the third after a walk, single and bunt single. Popielarczyk settled down for Washington and limited the damage to
just one run, an RBI groundout by the Netherlands centerfielder Emile Haswell to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Washington its one run lead on an RBI single by catcher Mekos Mantalis, making the score 3-2. Washington ultimately loaded the bases with one out and took a 4-2 lead when Johnson drove in a run being hit by a pitch. 

The threat ended after a double play and the score stayed 4-2 after four innings. Justin Naylor relieved Popielarczyk in the fifth inning for Washington, whose day ended with a line of four innings, allowing two runs (one earned), four hits, one walk and struck out five, and
the Netherlands put two runners in scoring position against Naylor, but couldn't get a run across to cut the deficit.

Mantalis had lightning in his bat as he was the spark for Washington, when in the bottom of the fifth, he hit a three-run blast to left field, his second hit and fourth RBI of the game, giving Washington a commanding 7-2 lead.

Naylor added to Washington's lead with a two out RBI double and was followed by Johnson with an RBI single to give Washington a 9-2 lead after five innings.

Washington held the Netherlands in the seventh inning to pick up the victory 9-2. Popielarczyk is awarded the victory, while Naylor threw three innings of relief, allowing no runs, one hit, one walk and struck out one.

The Netherlands starter, Boxelaar, receives the loss, allowing four runs (two earned), eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts over four innings. Danny Albinus and Guy van Son combuned for
two innings of relief. Albinus allowed five runs (all earned) and six hits, while van Son allowed a single hit.

Washington earned its first victory in the Printscape PONY League World Series since 2014 and moves on in the winner's bracket to face West Zone champion Covina, CA tomorrow at noon. The Netherlands gets one more chance to keep its first trip at the Printscape PONY League World Series alive as it faces Brownsville, TX in an elimination game tomorrow night at five.

Game #3 Bay County, Michigan 6 vs. Brownsville, Texas 4


Day two of the Printscape PNY League World Series began with the magaic of the Champions League game, opening ceremony festivities and a matchup of the South Zone and North Zone champions, Brownsville, TX versus Bay County, MI.

It didn't take long for scoring to open up, as Bronwsville took a first inning lead. After loading the bases by way of two walks and a hit batter, Browns ville right fielder Jose Banda smacked a triple to deep right center field, cleraing the bases, making it 3-0.

Bay County, looking for redemption after a 19-3 loss to Maui, HI in the semi-finals last year, was held hitless the first three frames, but managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. However, after a fielder's choice and a strikeout, relief pitcher Grant Horner struck a two RBI single into right to cut the lead to 3-2 after four.

Brownsville regained one of the two runs it alloed in the top of the fifth when Banda drove in his fourth run of the game, scoring shortstop Erick Ramierez on an RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bay County was in the same bases loaded situation, this time with one out. Third baseman Mason Kolak notched a two RBI double to left field to tie the game 404. Brownsville starter Rafael Capistrian picked up a strikeout for the second out, then reloaded the bases hitting pinch-hitter Bryce Fredenburg. Horner came up again looking to repeat his two RBI single in the fourth and picked up his thrd RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk.

After the walk, Capistrian was relieved, ending his day wtih a line of 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned), fivehits, two walks and six strikeouts. Capistrian was relieved by Fidel Garcia, who picked up the final out and Bay County leading 5-4 after five innings.

Bay County added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Kolak drove in his third run of the game on an RBI single, making it 6-4 Bay County.

Kolak relieved Horner in the seventh inning, but Brownsville made it interesting. Second baseman Honelio Leal started the inning with a single and reached second on a fielding error on the same play. Leal the nreached third with no outs on a wild pitch, but was left stranded. Horner picked up the win for Bay County pitching three innings, allowing one run (unearned), two hits, no walks and struck out three.

Bay County's starter Blake Waibel earned a no decision and pitch three innings, allowing three runs (all earned), two hits, two walks and struck out six. The save went to Kolak who threw one inning, allowing one hit and struck out one.

Capistrian received the loss for Brownsville and in relief, Garci went 1.1 innings, allowing one run (earned), one hit, walked two and struck  out two.

Bay County's victory moves them on in the winner's bracket to face the winner of Game #6, Monday night at 8. For Brownsville, it goes to the loser's bracket and faces either European Zone champion Netherlands or Washington, PA in an elimination game tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Game #2: Hagerstown, Maryland 6 vs. Youngstown, Ohio 1


Game two of the Printscape PONY League World Series matched up two members of the east coast, East Zone champion Hagerstown, MD and Host Area champion Youngstown, OH.

Scoring opened in the bottom of the second inning when Youngstown took an early 1-0 lead. Right fielder Mitch Seymour drove in third baseman Shawn Helpy on an RBI single before being thrown-out at second looking to stretch the single into a double.

In the top of the fourth, after being no-hit the first 3.2 innings, Hagerstown flashed two out lightning when first baseman Josh Black singled, then reached second on a wild pitch. Black was followed by left fielder Tyler Crain who roped an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game 1-1.

Hagerstown kept the bats rolling in the top of the fifth and took a 201 lead. Center fielder David Clever opened the inning with a lead-off double and was driven in by shortstop Kyle West on an RBI single.

Things just kept rolling for Hagerstown in the top of the sixth, as it extended its lead to 4-1. Pitcher Bradley Summers scored the third Hagerstown run on a wild pitch by Youngstown reliever Jeremy Kreuweiser. Then, pinch-hitter Izaiah Dillinger took Summers deep for a solo shot to add the fourth tally for Hagerstown.

Two more runs came across for Hagerstown in the seventh to make the lead 6-1, the score that held up as the final. West made the score 5-1 scoring on a wild ptch and catcher Corey Jamison added the sixth run scoring on a wild pithc as well.

Summers was awarded the win for Hagerstown going five innings allowing one run (earned), four hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Youngstown starter Jake Gehring received the loss and went 5.2 innings allowing three runs (all earned), five hits, three walks and struck out 12.

Hagerstown advances to play the winner of Game #5 between Mexico Zone champion Guasave, Sinaloa and Asia-Pacific Zone champion Seoul, Korea on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Youngstown moves into an elimination game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Carribean Zone champion Levittown , Puerto Rico.

Game #1: Guasave, Mexico 4 vs. Levittown, Puerto Rico 1


Game one of the 2017 Printscape Pony League World Series pitted the Mexican Zone champions, Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico versus Caribbean Zone champion Levittown, Puerto Rico in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel.

Levittown starting pitcher Joskar Feliciano struck out the side in the top of the first, but not before Guasave’s Videl Sotelo went deep to right field, giving Guasave an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Levittown had an opportunity to tie the game at one with a runner on third, but first baseman Anthony Rivera was struck out, with his third strike being called by the umpire for stepping out of the box.

Levittown had its best opportunity to not only tie, but possibly take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as it had runners on second and third with no outs. Sotelo picked up a strikeout for the first out, then Guasave’s defense picked up a 6-2- 5 double play to take out the two runners in scoring position to hold its 1-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Guasave added to its 1-0 lead when right fielder Jesus Parra hit the second solo home run of the game for Guasave, making it 2-0 in favor of the Mexican Zone champions.

Levittown finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth cutting the deficit in half to 2-1. Second baseman Miguel Vega led-off the inning reaching on an error by Guasave third baseman Pedro Cervantes. Vega moved to second on the throwing error and was moved to third on a
hard groundout by shortstop Jaime Santiago. Catcher Drachir Lugo drove in Vega on an RBI single up the middle, but Sotelo locked in and
struck out the last two batters of the inning to hold the score at 2-1 after six.

Guasave regained the run it allowed in the sixth, plus one, when catcher Pedro Felix hit Guasave’s third home-run of the game, this one a two-run shot, making it 4-1 Mexico and ultimately the final score of the game.

Sotelo went the distance for Guasave, allowing one run (unearned), two hits, three walks and striking out 12. Taking the loss for Levittown was Joskar Feliciano who allowed four runs (all earned), seven hits and struck out six.

The victory moves Guasave on in the winner’s bracket to face Asia-Pacific Zone champion Seoul, South Korea, tomorrow evening at 5:30 pm. Levittown moves into the loser’s bracket and will face the loser of Game 2 between Hagerstown, MD and Youngstown, OH.
