GM #14: Brownsville, TX 4 Tijuana, Mexico 0 (F/5)

In a rematch of game four of the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series, South Zone Champion Brownsville, TX and Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, MX met again in do or die game 14 and Brownsville sparked for a four run, three hit third inning, highlighted by Damian Cortez’s two RBI double, eliminating Tijuana by a final score of 4-0.

When these teams met previously, it was Tijuana’s David Gomez who stole the show throwing a complete game allowing just one run, nine hits and striking out nine. This time it was Brownsville’s pitching staff who shined, allowing just a single hit over the five innings, three walks and struck out four. Cortez earned the win for Brownsville.

Tijuana’s Manuel Estrada took the loss despite a hard-fought effort, allowing four runs, four hits and two walks. Aldrich Leon pitched the fifth and final inning and allowed no hits and struck out one.

The lone hit for Tijuana came off the bat of Ernesto Lopez to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

With the victory, Brownsville returns to the field later tonight with a game set to start at approximately 7 p.m. against West Zone Champion Long Beach, CA in the division finals on the bottom half of the bracket. Should Brownsville lose, they are eliminated. If Brownsville wins they force an if necessary rematch tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Tijuana’s run ends with a 1-2 overall record in the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series. Tijuana defeated Brownsville 3-1 and lost to Long Beach 8-2 and this game vs Brownsville.
